Yasmin Khan of Counterspace began her presentation with a game of Pong. She explained the similarities between her work and the game, how it all comes down to a back and forth. Khan’s work inhabits a space between the familiar and the unknown. Not quite here, but not quite there. She describes it as “the space for becoming.”
Boris Kochan opened his talk by sharing a personal story about the transformative experience of becoming a father which helped him learn an important lesson—to embrace change. By doing this, he opened himself to new travel opportunities, new cultures and experiences that greatly inspired his work and the development of the GRANSHAN Project.
Before Jan and Randoald took the stage, notecards were handed out to the audience for people to write questions on. “They should be related to animals. It would be better if it had nothing to do with graphic design.”

Victor Moscoso was the first of the psychedelic rock poster artists of the 1960’s era with formal academic training. Norman Hathaway interviewed Victor on his life and work. Victor’s introduction to the art world was through animated cartoons at a movie-house when he was growing up in Spain. Victor recalled the magic of moving color. Then through comic books, he learned to draw through copying, as well as to read.
René Knip never wanted to be a graphic designer.
Emmet Byrne is the design director for the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis. He had a great lecture about the work from their in-house design studio and how the different content streams of publishing work in parallel with other departments. His lecture was greatly focused on the framing of content and how it can be lost control of when it enters the world. Loosing control of a project when given to the public raised some new and interesting questions for the institution.
Martha Kelly Schumann began her career as an artist and holds a BFA in Graphic Design in Alabama where she grew up. During the summer of 2012 she pursued her interest in computers by attending a 3-month program at the Hacker School in NY where she fell in love with programming. She is now a software engineer at Uber and the founder of LadiesHackDay—a meetup for women of all skills and ages to build radical things together.
The hour began with Krishnamurthy answering yes or no questions posed by the audience.

Maria Popova of Brain Pickings kicked off Typo San Francisco 2014 with a keynote on the science of productivity and being present. Brain Pickings is a log of curiosity and the cross pollination of different fields that enrich each other.

This week we focus on Aaron James Draplin, a Portland, Oregon based graphic designer and art director.
Julie K. Andersen and Stig Møller Hansen are both lecturer at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. Whereas Julie is all about tangible pieces crafted by hand in laborious techniques like knitting, crochetting and so forth, like the project she showed at TYPO 2013 (watch video), Stig as an interactive designer and coder sees code as a creative tool for the designer. AT TYPO Berlin 2014 they’ll talk about their collaboration “Man vs. Machine” where it’s all about combining these two approaches to produce something new that has the qualities from each approach.
