Beyond TYPO – Der Blick auf andere Veranstaltungen aus der typografischen Szene: Am ersten Konferenztag des Schweizer Typografie-Symposium St.Gallen ging es um betrunkenes Kämpfen, Wurstplakate, Infografiken und brennende Fragen: Wie gestalte ich mein Leben? Wie gestalte ich Plakate? Wie finde ich die Suche? Es wurden Uhren verlost, Verse intoniert, diskutiert, musiziert. Was kann da noch kommen? So einiges. Hier Teil 2.

Die „Mondaine Helvetica 1“ ist der neueste Wurf der stolzen Schweizer Uhrenmanufaktur Mondaine. Entstanden ist sie unter der Federführung von Indra Kupferschmid und in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Uhrmacher. Seit 70 Jahren gibt es die klassische Bahnhofsuhr der Schweizerischen Bundesbahn, seit 30 Jahren produziert Mondaine die passende Armbanduhr. Nun gibt es eine neue Kollektion: die Mondaine Helvetica. Doch was hat eine Uhr mit Typografie zu tun?

Manuel Krebs: The physiognomy of typefaces

Manuel takes us back in history on the evolution of physiognomy. His talk is based on the thesis that character descriptions of human beings can be used in the same way to describe typefaces. To judge the character by its appearance clearly falls into the system of stereotypes. In the examples he quotes it even goes so far as judging the personality of human beings by the silhouette of a person’s head, or by the shape of the human scull formed by its brain. Measuring and categorising were the tools of these so called pseudo scientific results.

Lehni’s work is an intersection of computer science, art, and engineering. He is interested in gestures of production and process. He self taught himself programming at a young age, and is interested in using programming to give things behavior and develop intuition while still maintaining control.
