Helena Dell-Kolaschnik on current Russian Design

Helena Dell-Kolaschnik has been in touch with important representatives of the design industry in Russia for many years. After extensive research on the spot concerning the identity and status of Russian design and pioneer designers in Russia in the context of her MA thesis at FH Potsdam, her blog and she herself have become an important reference for Russian designers interested in an exchange with Germany.

We are very happy to have Helena on board TYPO Berlin 2013 and we sent her a few questions regarding this year’s TYPO Berlin’s Design Special on Russia.

Occupy the Druckerei – Druck-Workshop zur TYPO

Lettering vs. Calligraphy Live

On Thursday at 8 p.m. the ring is cleared at TYPO Hall. Martina Flor, lettering artist appears on the one side and Giuseppe Salerno, calligrapher, on the other.

For over half a year they run the online battle Lettering vs. Calligraphy. Each day Martina draws and Giuseppe writes one letter. The letter is chosen by both of them, its attribute by different guest specialists. Many of them are not-so-unknown type-related professionals or calligraphy artists from all over the world like Jan Middendorp, Nina Stössinger, Stephen Coles or Nate Williams, to name just a few. Visitors of the site can vote for their favourites.

Rene Wawrzkiewicz on current Polish Design

If anyone knows what’s going on in Poland’s Design Scene, it is Rene Wawrzkiewicz. He is the creator and curator of Design of the Year (Projekt Roku), the first post-1989 program and competition dedicated to a comprehensive description and assessment of graphic design in Poland. He has also masterminded the “Design Freedom” exhibition, presenting the transformation in Polish visual culture from the era of the “Solidarity” movement until the present day, which has been shown in Japan, Germany and Sweden (2010–2012).

Russian Touch at TYPO Berlin

One of TYPO’s major goals this year is to bring the audience in touch with design from abroad. Looking beyond one’s own borders can be crucial to enhancing one’s skills and refreshing creativity. Apart from a delectable list of international top designers, we decided to spotlight two countries that underwent major changes in their political state leaving hardly any aspect of their societies unchanged. Graphic design being no exception.

TYPO-B-13 Bag

TYPO meets design from Poland

Touch also means encounter. The next TYPO is therefore happy to announce two forums, which will take a closer look at the trends in Eastern European graphic design in Poland and Russia today.

The Polish design scene is moving fast, and has been increasingly triggering a lot of interest on a global scale. Our Design Special Poland will start on Friday, at noon, on the main hall: Rene Wawrzkiewicz will present ten graphic designers from Poland, who have become internationally famous for their works.
