TYPO Talks: What inspires you?
Armin Vit: Funny. “Inspiration” is going to be the focus of my talk. And you’ll almost wish you had never asked me. You’ll see.
TT: The theme of this year’s TYPO is Contrast. Can you give us an example of projects in your portfolio that contrast with one another? Or a project that contrasts with itself?
AV: The identities for our own Brand New Conference. The 2011 identity was all about bringing a hand-made element to it where we hired a sign painter to generate most of the typography. It was a very loose, textural result. In contrast the 2012 identity was heavily geometric and computer-ey relying on very strict grids and tireless (and tiresome) patterns.
TT: What other speakers at TYPO San Francisco are you most looking forward to?
AV: The democratic answer is ‘all of them’ but I do look forward in particular to seeing Christoph Niemann, Matthew Butterick, and Peter Bil’ak.
TT: What is your favorite thing to do in San Francisco?
AV: Huff and puff on the hills. (It’s great cardio!).
Armin Vit
TT: What are currently your favorite interesting/beautiful publications, books, movies and/or links?
AV: That I’m actually currently reading, watching, or enjoying:
- Publication / WIRED
- Book / Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking
- Movie / The King’s Speech (sorry, it took me years to watch it)
- TV / 24 (ditto, on season 7 at the moment)
- Link / This post by Michael Bierut on Design Observer (because I’m cited and the fact that it makes Rick Poynor upset)
TT: What does “contrast” mean to you?
AV: Contrast makes me eyes do the mambo
