Michael Johnson set up his presentation today by giving us an outline of what he was going to be talking about. Going from a brief history and overall philosophy of PIXAR to how they work and function as a studio. He delves into how PIXAR started as a spin off of Lucas Film, and eventually merging with Disney.
Just as her url claims, Jessica Hische is awesome. The self-described Letterer, Illustrator, Crazy Cat Lady, and Secret Web Designer opened today’s TYPO SF with an inspiring overview of how, in just a few short years, she’s come from being “that drop cap girl,” and “that should I work for free flowchart girl,” to being one of today’s most well known and loved designers.
We recently sent all TYPO Berlin 2012 speakers a little questionnaire with five questions. We will be posting these Q&A’s in a loose series in in the run-up to the conference. First up is »letterer, illustrator, type nerd, and secret web designer« Jessica Hische.
Die Illustratorin und »heimliche«-Webgestalterin Jessica Hische ist verrückt nach Schriften und entwirft sie häufig für persönliche Projekte. Bekannt wurde Hische mit Arbeiten für Tiffany, Target und American Express.
Beinahe bekannter machten sie persönliche Seitenprojekte, wie Micro-Sites zu den Themen »Mom This is How Twitter Works«, »Should I Work for Free?« und »Don’t Fear the Internet« (gemeinsam mit Russ Maschmeyer).
Illustrator Jessica Hische is an inspiration for many young designers around the globe. We can’t wait to hear from this “ADC Young Gun” at TYPO San Francisco!
After some introduction and teasing from Erik Spiekermann, Chip Kidd stepped on stage. He thanked Erik, and announced that “You make me feel like Lady Gaga, only with bigger breasts.” What was to follow was an hour of impeccable comic timing, dramatic pauses and eyebrow raises, he had the audience in stitches with barely a handful of words.
Morag Myerscough is one of a kind, her talk was as colourful as her work as was her outfit. In contrast to Jeff Faulkner’s talk it was about the user experience in the physical space. I found it very inspiring, uplifting and easy to relate to due to her enthusiastic and personal presentation.
In May, Eva-Lotta Lamm was invited by TYPO Berlin to capture talks in a visual way. Her atmospheric as well as conscise drawings were received so well that we invited her to TYPO London too.
Places are an affair of the heart for London based Morag Myerscough. Over the last decade she has become known as a passionate designer of public space. Starting from exhibition design she went on to injecting colour, pattern and big type into schools, health – or art centres. Morag adds a graphic sense that welcomes visitors and provides orientation and a sense of place. “We sort of infiltrated the architecture scene.” Morag remarks in a recent video interview with Eye magazine and “I want to work for people who are brave and want to try out new things”.
