61st TDC Show in Berlin

At the end of January, two juries from the type directors club in New York singled out the year’s best typography work for the 61st time. The prizes are given for typographic design – new fonts – as well as for their application, whether in books, posters, packaging, corporate design or in digital form. The work of the TDC competition winners will be seen in Europe for the first time in a three-week exhibition starting May 24, 2015, at Berlin’s Aufbau Haus artists’ complex.

In the type design category, the jurors Claudia de Almeida, Paul Barnes, Dino dos Santos and Tal Lemming selected 22 winners from the 216 designs that were submitted. In the communications design category, Garson Yu, Geray Gencer, Chelsea Cardinal, John Gall, Alisa Wolfson, Mike Rigby and Pum Lefebure picked 272 winners from 28 countries. The 48 winners from Germany included the new FontShop-Website and the micro-site for the font family FF Franziska.

A total of some 1,800 different pieces of work from 58 countries were submitted to the 61st TDC competition. The jury praised the creative range of the work and the notably high standard of the student work. Jurors were less impressed with the trend toward “curly (handwriting) fonts”, chalkboard typography, and packaging design in 19th century style.

Before the winners of the 61st TDC competition are immortalized in a yearbook, the originals will be sent on an international travelling exhibition. The first stop in Europe is Berlin, where the Kreuzberg-based typography and technology company Monotype will mount the premiere. The exhibition will include books, posters, ads, logos, stationary, and packaging. It is an essential source of inspiration for designers, typography nerds, font connoisseurs and UX developers. Admittance is free.
