Hamish Muir was co-founder and principal of the London-based graphic design studio 8vo (1985-2001), and co-editor of Octavo, International Journal of Typography (1986-92). In 2011 Muir co-founded Outcast Editions, a digital publishing company specialising in interactive design and architecture books for iPad and runs, together with Paul McNeil, MuirMcNeil Design Systems (read Paul’s “6 questions to …” here).
Paul McNeil is a graphic designer specialising in typography, information design and generative design. He has over 35 years’ experience working in brand communications and visual identity for the UK telecommunications, government and charity sectors. He currently works in the Postgraduate Design area at the London College of Communication as Course Leader of MA Contemporary Typographic Media. Yanone arbeitet als Multimediakünstler, Grafikdesigner, Schriftdesigner und Filmemacher in Weimar. Er machte seinen Abschluss an der Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar mit einer arabisch/lateinischen Schriftfamilie und absolvierte danach den Type-&-Media-Master in Den Haag. Momentan arbeitet er an dem experimentellen Tanzfilm Antithesis, den er in seiner kompletten Länge auf der TYPO Berlin 2014 vorstellen wird.
Ann Bessemans (°1983) has a MA in graphic design (Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg). Her typographic graduation project was awarded a national prize. On October 25, 2012, she defended her PhD dissertation entitled “Type Design for Children with Low Vision”, under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Unger (Leiden University) and Prof. Dr. Bert Willems (Hasselt University). Bessemans’ PhD project is an attempt at bridging the gap between font designers and cognitive scientists studying the legibility of letter characters. The ultimate goal of this PhD project was to design a font that can reduce the reading problems of children with low vision.
Sander Neijnens (1957) lives and works as a graphic designer in Tilburg, the Netherlands. Besides commissioned work he writes and publishes books about specific subjects as the design of shirt numbers and the enchanting sound of the Giulietti accordion.
Andreas Koop ist Dipl.-Designer und Master (MAS). Seit 1995 leitet er ein Designbüro in Rückholz im Allgäu (D). Nebenbei engagiert er sich als Autor, Dozent und Designforscher. Anthony Burrill has gained a following in the design world for his innovative collaborations with friends and fellow artists, designers, print-makers and film-makers. Burrill works across a range of media, including posters, moving image and three-dimensional work. His persuasive, up-beat illustration and design has been commissioned by cultural, social and commercial clients around the world from New York, to London to Tokyo.
He combines an instinctive handling of colour and composition with a witty approach to words. He has worked on advertising campaigns and posters for clients such as The Economist, the British Library and London Underground. He regularly collaborates with musicians and animators to make films, music promos and animations, using his distinctive visual vocabulary and passion for fusing sound and image.
Paul is an animator and filmmaker. He is also the managing director of the theater company 1927 which he founded with Suzanne Andrade in 2005. Their production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, which is running at the Komische Oper Berlin at the moment has audiences rapt. The Guardian describes their shows as “A perfect mixture of all the things worth loving: silent films, the cabaret of the Weimar Republic, David Lynch, and the brothers Grimm”. Ferdinand Ulrich liebt Schriften und die Auseinandersetzung mit ihren Geschichten. In seinem Berliner Studio gestaltet er Publikationen und Schriftmuster. Darüberhinaus forscht und schreibt er über Typografie und Gestaltung. Er beschäftigt sich intensiv mit der Designlehre in den 20er und 30er Jahren. Seit 2012 lehrt er Editorial Design an der Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. Auf der TYPO spricht er über Hermann Zapf Bleisatzschrift Hunt Roman, die der legendäre Schriftgestalter 1961/62 entwarf.
