The father of record cover design – Alex Steinweiss

Alex Steinweiss “invented” American album cover art. Before him so-called “tombstone” 78 RPM albums sold in music and record shops without any image but dull kraft paper covers. On his own, he launched a line of illustrated covers for Columbia Records, and sales soared. Years later he helped design the first LP sleeve for CBS. This stalk will look at the designer that changed the look of music.

Steven Heller, the co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author Program and co-founder of the MFA in Design Criticism at the School of Visual Arts, is author of over 100 books on design and popular culture, including Stylepedia (Chronicle Books) and Anatomy of Design (Rockport Editions).
