Peter Sikking leads the interaction design for the otf•UI project, which aims to drag the user-controllable OpenType features out of obscurity and make them generally, and consistently, available. All platforms where Harfbuzz is used—desktop, tablet and handheld—are in scope.
There are 2 parts to this session. In the first Peter presents how the infrastructure traits of this project brings its set of challenges (what is designed is a framework of solutions, for others to use).
In the second part Peter wants to challenge the audience with the question what it means for them—font designers and publishers, shapers of standards—that on a global scale OpenType features will be available to everyone who is not a typographer (just like emojis are, these days).
