Frank E. Blokland is type designer (of among other typefaces, DTL Documenta and DTL Haarlemmer), Senior Lecturer in type design at the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague since 1987, and Professor and Research Fellow at the Plantin Institute of Typography, Antwerp, since 1995. Blokland founded the Dutch Type Library in 1990 and a couple of years later he initiated and supervised the development of DTL FontMaster, a set of professional font tools developed together with the Hamburg-based company URW++. October 2016 he successfully defended his PhD dissertation at Leiden University, which was the outcome of a research conducted in order to test the hypothesis that Gutenberg and consorts developed a standardized and even unitized system for the production of textura type, and that this system was extrapolated for the production of roman type in Renaissance Italy.
Jürgen Willrodt studied Physics and Mathematics and got a PhD in theoretical particle physics in 1976. He joined URW Software & Type GmbH in 1983 as software developer. His first major development project was the porting of the IKARUS font production system from DEC to Sun Unix. He has been the main developer of the IKARUS system since 1985, developing interpolation, auto-tracing, and hinting algorithms, as well as special algorithms for Kanji separation. At URW++ Jürgen is responsible for the font production and the font-tools development, which includes FoundryMaster and DTL OTMaster.
This hands-on session will focus on the (post)production process of (variable) fonts using FoundryMaster and DTL OTMaster. FoundryMaster, developed at URW for macOS, Windows and Linux, is the successor of DTL FontMaster, of which the first edition was released at the ATypI Copenhagen conference back in 2001. Both applications find their origin in the IKARUS system from Dr. Peter Karow, who stood at the cradle of digital typography roughly 40 years ago. If everything goes according to plan, the first retail edition of FoundryMaster will be released at TYPO Labs 2018.
DTL OTMaster is the font utility that allows users to visually edit the contents of tables in TrueType and OpenType fonts. The first edition of OTM, released in 2009, was received enthusiastically in the field. Adobe’s Dr. Ken Lunde, for example, wrote: ‘[…] I would like to state here that DTL OTMaster is a fabulous tool. The best way for me to characterize it is that it gives me the power of AFDKO’ “spot” tool, and that of TTX, but wrapped up in nice GUI.’ A lot of functionality has been added since then and OTM is in use by type designers and font producers all over the world. If everything goes according to plan, version 7 of OTMaster, which contains extensive support for the OpenType Font Variations format, will be released at TYPO Labs 2018.
FoundryMaster and OTMaster will be demonstrated and discussed by Jürgen Willrodt (URW) and Frank E. Blokland (DTL).
