Workshop: Breaking Borders – a collective Arabic stencil workshop

TYPO Berlin 2016 Beyond Design | Friday, 13 May | 11:00 am | Nest | English

This workshop centres around revelling in the properties of the earliest Arabic script style(s) to create a group stencil piece of a text excerpt by an Arab author. Participants will each work on one word of the text and will be free to visually interpret its historical form. They will be guided into transforming it into a stencil lettering, while respecting or breaking the characteristics of the script in terms of its contrast, weight, line quality and white space. Through this workshop, participants will learn how to observe and get inspired by the architecture of the early Abbasid script and to play and experiment with its hardly explored graphic potential.
