Karin von Ompteda explores type – and she is an expert on designing typefaces for the visually impaired. Karin is currently researching for a PhD at the Royal College of Art in London, where her work is focused on integrating scientific and design approaches to typeface legibility. When she changed to art school after two biology degrees in her home country of Canada, she followed her heart. However her approach to type, its shapes and structures has roots in her biological background.
What’s next in 15 years? Can we know? And more importantly, assuming we don’t know what’s going to happen next, where do we start with anticipating change? ‘Shift’ is the theme of this year’s TYPO Berlin and boy; did Petr van Blokland talk about a shift. In a sixty minute during whirlwind van Blokland introduced the audience to his vision of the future designer. In his presentation Van Blokland explores the old and the new, breaking up principles and believes by introducing things like ‘Automated Design’, calling InDesign an obsolete dinosaur and a confronting truth on numbers.
Als Gesche Joost energisch durch das futuristisch anmutende Typo-Tor auf die Hall-Bühne stürmt, möchte man sie fast für eine ihrer eigenen Studentinnen halten: Jung wirkt sie und dynamisch, besser könnte sie ihr beeindruckendes Curriculum Vitae wohl kaum verkörpern. Gesche Joost leitet das Design Research Lab an den Deutschen Telekom Laboratories, ist bereits Juniorprofessorin und seit 2006 unter den “100 Köpfen von morgen”. Sie freut sich augenscheinlich wahnsinnig, auf der Typo Space zu sein: “Am liebsten würde ich jeden Tag damit beginnen, durch dieses Tor zu schreiten”, das sind ihre ersten Worte – spontan möchte man jetzt schon aus dem Publikum zurückrufen: Ach, Gesche, da wären wir dann gerne dabei!
19.03 Uhr. Steven Heller betritt die Bühne, fordert: “Leute, macht was! Wir brauchen Sound.” Und dann geht’s wirklich rund! Marschierende Soldaten, ein Bild jagt das nächste. Dazu donnernder Sound, bewusst gewählt und auch irgendwie passend zum Thema Totalitarismus. Nach drei Minuten ist der Spuk vorüber, Heller spricht.
