“Warning, this talk contains strong Spanish accent!” Two men in grey T-shirts and jeans step on stage, equipped with DIY Lego wearables for controlling the slides, and fire off some tunes on the built-in keyboards. It’s Brosmind studio’s 10th anniversary, and as the penultimate talk at TYPO Berlin 2016, they want to celebrate with us. And do they ever!
During this wild ride, we learn how their illustrative style changed from black and white outlines to color to three-dimensional objects. We see a film tribute to Juan’s hair (from blonde bowl cut to dark and messy curls). We learn about their tools (a healthy mixture of analog and digital), their routines and their belief that lo-fi sometimes produces better results than hi-fi.
Now and then the presentation is interrupted by a brief sidekick of video gaming: 8-bit characters of the brothers appear on the screen and two people from the audience are invited to battle them with controllers (they win). Then Brosmind play some jingles on their wearable arm keyboards – and then it’s on with the show!
But honestly, it’s impossible to capture this talk in written words. It was too busy, too colorful, too much fun! The illustrated universe of vegetables, the pizza song, the (Google-translated) Japanese advertisement for a fictional electronic pet. If I were to try to capture this show’s atmosphere in words, I wouldn’t be allowed to use any spaces or fullstops. I strongly suggest taking a look at the video once it’s posted, and in the meantime, browsing their colorful portfolio.
Brosmind put the audience in just the right mood for TYPO Berlin’s big finale, and they definitely left us all with an urge to turn our own weird thoughts into reality.
