Vitaly Friedman: Being niminy-piminy does not help

As he said in his talk, Vitaly Friedman, one of the founders of Smashing Magazine is not becoming tired of trying to find the right solution when it comes to possible digital problems. Optimisation is his goal. Although he has worked out a specific set of patterns to tackle upcoming issues, his mind is open, flexible and always on the look out for good solutions.

We all love well organised websites with easy navigation and space, and expect the same comfort while browsing the web on our smartphone displays. Missing information is not an option. Without giving a “nerdy” impression, Vitaly explains which processes are necessary to reduce content on larger screens, so they are optimised for other devices—in other words, making it responsive.

Editor-in-chief / Smashing Magazine (Freiburg)

Vitaly Friedman loves beautiful content and does not give up easily. From Minsk in Belarus, he studied computer science and mathematics in Germany, discovered the passage a passion for typography, writing and design. After working as a freelance designer and developer for 6 years, he co-founded Smashing Magazine, a leading online magazine dedicated to design and web development. Vitaly is the author, co-author and editor of all Smashing books. He currently works as editor-in-chief of Smashing Magazine in the lovely city of Freiburg, Germany.

Encompassing the information and organising it into patterns is his approach. With the same pragmatism he converts logos into responding elements. Being niminy-piminy does not help, you have to choose the best visual solution even if it means to altering previous patterns established. “If you concentrate on the core essence of content no matter how complex it is—it is always possible to reduce it down.”

In his workshops he demonstrated an incredible amount of experience and ways of finding solutions to optimise the digital appearance of content and navigations. It was definitely worth attending as questions were more than welcome.
