Type Systems of MuirMcNeil

Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir gave a very detailed and colorful overview of what it means to make type systems. They also took the audience through range of outputs, including books full of unique glyph creations to bright, colorful, geometric posters for exhibition openings. Think of this as typographic contemporary art.

The hightlight of their poster creations was the large set they designed in 2011 based on the original Wim Crouwell exhibition which had taken place 1968. Each poster contains big and small variations of color, shapes, and patterns. While clicking through a large set of these posters Hamish declared they created over 230 poster designs in total.

Paul gave a very detailed review of some of the typefaces he has designed. Core Dissection is a system where each weight has different portions of letters removed. A user can layer weights upon each other to get complete characters but with segments of different color. Flip is a type system where each weight contains glyps rotated on different axis’.

One of their type system creations, FF ThreeSix, is something they designed to maintain a certain geometric aesthetic yet still usable at small sizes. Have a look and play around with FF ThreeSix on the Next FontShop.com.
