Nancy Birkhölzer and Prof. Reto Wettach: Empower the analog

Professor Reto Wettach of IXDS, together with his colleague Nancy Birkhölzer gave an interesting talk on their perspective of the relationship humans have with the physical and digital world. The talk was largely based around the fact that people are increasingly interacting with the world around them using just a tiny screen and the tips of their fingers. They questioned how much emotion can possibly be expressed through this type of medium and whether or not we need new ways of incorporating technology into our lives which empower us to interact on a more human level.

Of course the fact that we are all consumed by technology should be nothing new to whoever may be reading this blog post. Unless you’ve for some godforsaken reason printed out the internet, you’re inevitably starring into a screen at the moment. Reto and Nancy see this as a huge opportunity for designers to step in and manipulate our relationship with technology, as well as the culture we’ve developed around it. They shone light on the fact that as it stands, technology is very intrusive in our lives (receiving a million notifications a day, being constantly distracted by emails, the never-ending feeling of needing to check if your latest post is resonating with your followers), contrasting this with how seamlessly the analog world seems to be integrated into our lives.

Showing a handful of interesting examples such as a credit card machine that, while swiping your card, increases the friction based on how much money is being transferred, a New York City bakery with an oven that tweets whatever just finished baking, and DriveNow, a car sharing service who’s success is attributed to both the analog and digital aspects of the company, they explained how there is a gap between the two realms which we haven’t done enough to close.

The challenge now, is for Designers to bring the two worlds closer together which will inevitably influencing the way we incorporate technology into our lives.
