Sampo Kaasila is leading Monotype’s Research and Development team and having fun creating new technologies. He has a passion for the intersection of art and technology. Sampo has extensive experience with research and development, fonts and font rendering, having been the lead engineer for the TrueType technology while at Apple during the end of the 80s. He then co-founded a software technology company, and now two acquisitions later he is at Monotype. His main focus is on machine learning and deep learning. Sampo holds a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Out of Monotype Labs: The deep learning based technology, that identifies fonts in pictures, behind the new WhatTheFont app. It is an extreme classification problem due to the large (133,000+) number of fonts.
