Creative workshop “Think Cover!”

TYPO Berlin 2015 Character | Friday, 22 May | 3:00 pm | Foyer | German

A successful magazine cover communicates the content of a cover story in a compact, dramatic manner and with as much surprise as possible. In less than second, it has to be comprehensible and magically appealing to anyone.

Stefan Kiefer was the development and design supervisor for the covers of Spiegel newsweekly for 18 years. He will give us a glimpse into his rich trove of experience in the Think Cover! workshop. He’ll also illustrate practical ways of coming up with new ideas week after week and developing them with the team.

The goal is to understand and learn to apply the universal principles that make for a successful cover or product, i.e. “think cover”.

In teams, participants will develop and draft cover ideas for two fictitious magazines with differing subject focuses. The whole thing will be done in real time, under realistic working conditions (with intense time pressure). The teams will brainstorm, evaluate ideas, and think of possible designs including tips for picture research.
